The development of biomaterials that can effectively and reliably repair bone defects has long been an important goal of orthopedics, especially of orthopaedic and maxillofacial surgeons. Synthetic materials such as hydroxyapatite, bioglass and other calcium phosphate ceramics have been utilized for more than 50 years in the design of implantable prostheses. They are typically used for the replacement of hard tissue (i.e., bone). Biomaterials can be used for orthopedic or dental applications. Engineering and fabricating biomaterials are the cornerstones of the development of biomaterials, as artificial hard tissues can be created to have excellent biocompatibility. For implantable biomaterials, the biocompatibility of biomaterials as implants is a critical factor in bone tissue engineering. The main concern is the degradation of biomaterials, which affects the tissue response. To consider the degradation of biomaterials, it is necessary to consider the kinetics of material ingrowth. Other concerns include controlling local concentrations of growth factors released from the biomaterials, controlling interstitial fluid flow, and tuning the surface topography of the biomaterials.
